Son of King George III and Queen Charlotte. Married Lady Augusta Murray in 1793. Marriage declared void by the King in 1794 because she was Catholic. In 1801, Augustus Frederick was named Baron Arklow, Earl of Inverness and Duke of Sussex. In 1811, he was made grand master of the freemasons; in 1816, was elected president of the Society of Arts; and from 1830 to 1838, was president of the Royal Society. He was a benefactor in the arts and sciences.
