The Pittsburgh Jewish National Fund was founded in 1924 with the mission of raising funds to purchase land in what was originally Palestine, to facilitate the settlement of Jews there, and to make the land more usable by draining swamps and forestation.

Herman Shapira proposed the JNF in 1901 as a national fund for the purchase of land in Palestine to be leased to Jewish settlers. Since then, the JDF has purchased land and built infrastructure in Israel.

The Jewish National Fund (JNF, Ḳeren Ḳayemet le-Yiśraʼel) was founded at the 5th Zionist Congress in 1901 in order to purchase land in Palestine. Its mandate later expanded to projects to further the rebuilding and resettlement of Palestine and the afforestation and reclamation of land.
