Harry Kaufman

Alfred Kaufmann was born in Hainstadt in 1893. He served in World War I and was held as a prisoner of war by the British until 1919. In 1920 he became a member of the Oberrat (Supreme Council) of the Jewish community in Baden. In 1936, he opened a school for Jewish children in Freiburg, which was closed in 1938. He left Germany for England in 1939, and immigrated to the United States the following year. Alfred Kaufmann died in New York in 1984. Max Kaufman, a second cousin of Alfred Kaufmann's, immigrated to San Francisco in 1893, where he opened a store for handbags and jewelry called Sommer and Kaufman.
