Ralph B. Strassburger was born in Norristown, Pa., on Mar. 26, 1883. He received his preliminary education in the public and private schools of Norristown. He attended the Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, N.H., and in 1901 was appointed to the United States Naval Academy. After his graduation in 1905, Strassburger was assigned to cruiser duty until 1909 when he resigned from the Navy to become manager of a boiler manufacturer. In 1914, he was an unsuccessful candidate for United States House of Representatives. When the First World War broke out, he re-entered the Navy as a transport officer serving until 1919. Following the war, he ventured into the publishing business, eventually becoming the owner of the Norristown Herald. He was an active member of many Pennsylvania genealogical and historical societies, a family historian, and an author of books on Pennsylvania German history and culture.
