Biographical notes:

Deep Springs College, founded in 1917 by power and mining magnate L. L. Nunn, is located thirty miles from the nearest town, in a high desert valley of eastern California. Mr. Nunn wished his students to learn the value of service and practical knowledge as well as be able to work uninterrupted by the distractions of modern society and learn that freedom requires living in accordance with the ideals and duties of one's community. Each of the 26 male students experiences a broad seminar-style education based on the "three pillars of Deep Springs": academic pursuits, the labor program, and self-governance. Following their time at Deep Springs most students transfer to other institutions of higher learning to earn college degrees.
