Served in South Africa with Inniskilling Dragoons, 1884-1902; CB, 1902; commanded 5th Royal Irish Lancers, 1902-05; 4th Cavalry Brigade, 1905-10; Inspector of Cavalry, 1910-14; in Command of Cavalry, 1914; in Command of Fifth Army Corps, 1915; KCB, 1915; in Command of Third Army, 1915-17; KCB; Lt-General; GCB, 1918; GCMG, 1918; Commander in Chief, Egyptian Expeditionary Force, 1917-19; captured Jerusalem Dec. 1917, Damascus Oct. 1918, Aleppo Oct. 1918 & armistice signed with Turks 30th Oct. 1918; Field Marshal and Viscount, 1919; High Commissioner for Egypt, 1919-25; obtained recognition of Egypt as a sovereign state 1922; GCVO, 1934. Married, 1896, Adelaide Chapman: 1 son (d.1917). Died 14 May 1936.
