1st lieutenant 11th Cavalry sent to Manila, Philippines (1902); Adjutant for U.S. Army in Cuba (1906). As major became military attache to Greece (1915). During WWI served as U.S. Army military observer with Allied Forces on the Macedonian front, in Mesopotamia and with the British Egyptian Expeditionary Force. Was with Allenby's forces in Palestine (1917) and with Dunsterville's Brigade in Persia (1918). In charge of American secret service in Netherlands and Germany (1918). Was military attache in Berlin (1919-1920), Mexico (1926-1927) and Yugoslavia (1928-1929). Promoted to colonel.
