Biographical notes:
This opera is based on an historical event, a bloody coal miners' strike at the Columbine Mine in Serene, Colorado in 1927. The event which is the focus of the opera is the confrontation which occurred on 21 Nov. 1927 between the miners and the State Police, when the unarmed miners were fired on with machine guns.
