The Texas Association of Museums (TAM) is a nonprofit organization and one of the oldest and largest museum associations in the United States. TAM seeks to promote the development of knowledge and skills among museum staffs, officers, trustees, and volunteers in all types of Texas museums. Officially organized as the TAM in 1974, the organization had existed previously as an informal network of museums with an annual meeting beginning around 1961 and then as the Texas Museum Association, which was established by constitution in 1969. The TAM hired its first executive director and established a permanent office in Austin in 1976 with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
