Biographical notes:

Professor Smith (1916-2000) was the foremost Canadian scholar on Islam and comparative religion. He founded the Institute for Islamic Studies at McGill University in Montreal in 1951, helped establish the Center for the Study of World Religions at Harvard, and the Department of Comparative Religion at Dalhousie University. His "The Meaning and End of Religion" (1963) was a groundbreaking study of the historical changes of meaning of such words as "religion", "faith", and "belief."
