First National Bank (Springfield, Ill.)

First bank in the city to be chartered by the federal government. Organized in 1863; chartered and began business in 1864. Absorbed First Trust and Savings Bank in 1916. Trust agreements of 1918 and 1919 resulted in shareholders acquiring all stock of State National Bank of Springfield (opened for business in 1870) and Sangamon Loan and Trust Company (organized in 1886; absorbed Lincoln Bank in 1910). In 1937 absorbed First State Trust and Savings Bank of Springfield, which was formed in 1920 by merger of State National Bank and Sangamon Loan and Trust Company.
