Before she was married, she and her sisters were involved in Edinburgh literary and political circles that hosted the likes of Pitt, Burke, Sheridan, and William Windham. Years later, during her husband's colonial secretaryship of the Cape of Good Hope, she kept a diary recording her first-hand account of South African colonial social life.
