Carl Wesley McCardle (1904-1972) was born in Cameron, West Virginia, and was a graduate of Washington and Jefferson College in 1926. He was a career journalist, who served as a diplomatic correspondent for several papers. From 1953 to 1957, he served as Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs, and during 1957 and 1958, as Assistant to Chairman of the Board of Penn-Tex Corporation.
