Geneticist.
Rhoades began his professional career as an associate geneticist at the United States Department of Agriculture in 1935. In 1940 he went to Columbia University as associate professor and then to the University of Illinois as Professor of Botany. He came to Indiana University in 1958 where he chaired the Botany Department until 1968. In 1974 he became Distinguished Professor Emeritus and continued his studies in corn genetics until shortly before his death.
