Biographical notes:
The El Cerrito Branch of the NAACP was founded in 1965 to serve the African American community of El Cerrito, El Sobrante, and Pinole, California. In its first year, membership reached nearly 100 members; during the time period this collection covers, membership averaged about 150-200 members. Its activities were chronicled in a newsletter, "The El Cerrito Branchline," largely written and produced by Patricia Freeman. It regularly sent delegates to the national conference, and was the recipient of several awards at the national level.
