1859, July 26 Born, Paris, France 1880 Graduated, École Polytechnique, Paris, France 1884 Left the French government to go to Panama as chief engineer of the three sections of the canal 1885 Chief engineer, French Transoceanic Co. of Panama under Ferdinand de Lesseps 1888 1902 Published, lectured, and negotiated in France and the United States in an effort to gain support for the completion of the Panama Canal 1903 Named minister plenipotentiary to Washington by the new Panama government; negotiated the Hay–Bunau-Varilla Treaty, which gave the United States control of the Canal Zone 1916 Devised a new system for water purification 1940, May 18 Died, Paris, France
