Jean Iona Gottmann (1915-), a geographer from the University of Paris, conducted a study of the metropolitan regions along the eastern seaboard of the United States. The research was conducted at Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton University with funds provided by the Twentieth Century Fund. The end result of Dr. Gottmann's investigation was a 1961 publication, "Megalopolis: The Urbanized Northeastern Seaboard of the United States."
Gottmann examined some of the challenges facing the urbanized areas during the early 1960s, such as the structure and quality of life; activities, transportation, communications and food supply; the natural resources and productive capacity; and the city of the future.
