Biographical notes:

Born in Alden, Erie County, N.Y. He graduated from Yale in 1853, studied law with his uncle, Horatio Ballard of Cortland, N.Y., and was admitted to the bar in 1856. He practiced for a short time before joining an artillery company in La Crosse, Wisconsin. After the Battle of Bull Run, he enlisted in the army, and served with the 1st Wisconsin Light Artillery and the 2nd Wisconsin Cavalry. He was appointed lieutenant-colonel of the 1st Arkansas Cavalry on 10 July 1862, and in Oct. 1864, he was commissoned adjutant-general of Arkansas. He was defeated as the Republican candidate for governor of Arkansas in 1876, and returned to Buffalo in 1879 to practice law. He died in Buffalo 30 Nov. 1901.
