Clarence C. Clendenen was the author of several books and articles on military and Mexican-American affairs. A 1920 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, he earned his M.A. from Michigan State University and PhD in history from Stanford University. He served as a colonel in the Army Cavalry with the 1st, 5th, 7th, and 10th regiments. Through the 1950s, Clendenen taught at West Point and served in the Philippines, Japan, and Venezuela, as well as on the Mexican border. He was also Curator Emeritus of the Military Collections at the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace at Stanford University and taught at Menlo School and College in Menlo Park, California. He won the Albert Beveridge Memorial Award from the American Historical Society in 1960.
