The 2nd South Carolina was organized in summer 1775 at Charleston to consist of ten companies from eastern South Carolina. On Nov. 4, 1775, it was adopted into the Continental Army and assigned to Southern Department. Until Francis Marion took over the command of the regiment on Sept. 23, 1778, it had been under command of William Moultrie (June 1775 - Sept. 1776 and Isaac Motte (Sept. 1776- Sept. 1778).

Authorized in June 1775 in the South Carolina State Troops and adopted February 1776 into the Continental Army. In September 1776 Francis Marion, who became known as the "Swamp Fox," was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the S.C. 2nd Regiment.

The Second South Carolina Regiment was organized during the summer of 1775 in Charleston, South Carolina. Adopted into the Continental Army in November, the regiment was assigned to the Southern Department in February 1776. In January 1779 the regiment was assigned to the 1st South Carolina Brigade, in June to McIntosh's Brigade and in September to Huger's Brigade. Thomas Hall served as captain in the 2nd South Carolina Regiment, and took part in the siege of Savannah, October 9, 1779. Hall was captured at the siege of Charles Town in 1780, and imprisoned at St. Augustine.

The regiment was captured by the British Army at Charleston on May 12, 1780. John Blake was a captain in the 2nd Regiment.
