Irish philosopher, teacher, and novelist, Iris Murdoch (1919-1999) was acquainted with and influenced by philosophers such as Jean-Paul Sartre and by bohemian artists and writers of Fitzrovia. Religion, too, influenced Murdoch's work. Although her family was primarily Presbyterian (with Quaker and Brethren connections), she became, for a brief period during the late 1940's and early 1950's, Anglo-Catholic, taking retreats at an Anglican Benedictine convent. She later began to doubt her faith. Her novel, The Bell (1958), considered by some her best work, explores spirituality in the absence of religion.
