Thomas Thacher. Upon the death of President Washington, he was invited to give a sermon to the Boston Mechanic Association that was subsequently published as A Funeral Oration: Occasioned by the Death of General George Washington (1800). In 1801, he was ordained to the Unitarian ministry in Chelsea, Massachusetts. In 1812, while in Chelsea, he began the Boston Society for the Religious and Moral Improvement of Seamen, the first such organization in the United States. Tuckerman also published Gleams of Truth, or Scenes from Real Life (1835) and The Principles and Results of the Ministry at Large, in Boston (1838).
