Matthew B. Ridgway was a United States (U.S.) Army officer who graduated from the United States Military Academy (USMA) in 1917. During the 1920s and 1930s he had various assignments at USMA, Tientsin, China, Fort Sam Houston, Nicaragua, Washington, D.C., Fort Clayton, Panama Canal Zone, Philippine Islands, General Staff School, Sixth Corps Area at Chicago, Army War College, the Presidio of San Francisco and Brazil. During WWII he was assigned to the War Plans Division until 1942 and then had command duties with the 82nd Airborne Division in the North African, Italian and western France campaigns. He then commanded the XVIII Airborne Corps in the Ardennes, Rhine, Ruhr Pocket and Elbe campaigns until 1945. After the war, he was assigned as the United States Army Representative on the Military Staff Committee to the United Nations and was on the Inter-American Defense Board. In 1948 he was appointed commander-in-chief of the Caribbean Command. In 1950 he assumed command of the Eighth (8th) Army and in 1951 was appointed the Supreme Commander of the United Nations Command in the Far East and was also promoted to general. Ridgway was named Supreme Commander, Allied Powers, Europe in 1952 and was appointed the Army Chief of Staff in 1953. He retired from military service in 1955.
