Bakery and Confectionary Workers' International Union of America. Local 34 (Des Moines, Iowa)
Biographical notes:
Bakery and Confectionary Workers Local 34 was chartered in 1933. In 1935, after a two week strike, the local obtained its first contract with the bakeries in Des Moines. The local represented workers at Continental Baking Company, Colonial Baking, Schulze Baking, Zinsmasters Breads, Inc., Ungles Baking, the Supreme Baking Company, Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, and Omar, Inc. Local 34's 1943 contract attempted to gain vacation rights and night shift differential pay for their members. The employers would not agree and the dispute was eventually refered to the War Labor Board for settlement.
