Dawes was born in 1839 in Marietta, Ohio; educated in Wisconsin; in the Civil War captain of a volunteer company, 6th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment, First Corps; fought in the battles of Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Brigade; promoted after the war to Brevet Brigadier General; died in 1899.
