Hard began his career in journalism in 1902 as a reporter for Northwestern University Settlement House's monthly newsletter. By 1906, he was contributing to numerous magazines as a freelancer. In 1929, Hard ventured into radio, and in 1932 he broadcast reports from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. In 1937 he was named executive assistant to the Chairman of the Republican National Committee.
