Biographical notes:

Alberto Santos-Dumont (1873-1932) was an important early pioneer of aviation. Born in Saõ Paulo, Brasil, he moved with his family to Paris in 1891. His studies led him to learn to fly, then build dirigibles and airplanes. After a grave accident in 1910, he became ill with multiple sclerosis. Very depressed, he returned to Brazil in 1928, and died in 1932.
