Dr. John Singleton was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 7, 1930. He earned an A.B. from Oberlin College in Mathematics and Education in 1952 and an A.M. from Haverford College in their Social and Technical Assistance Program. In 1953, Singleton also earned his first grade professional certificate for secondary teaching in North Dakota. Singleton earned his Ph. D. in International Development Education from Stanford University in 1965. Among Singleton's early positions were teaching mathematics and science at the Fort Totten Indian Reservation in North Dakota and working as an Education and Training Specialist in the Truk District of the U.S. Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. Prior to coming to the University of Pittsburgh, Singleton spent three years at the University of Hawaii as Associate Director of the International Development Fellowships and Seminars.
