Biographical notes:

Brass was born in Toowoomba, Queensland on May 27, 1900. He is especially known for his plant collecting in New Guinea. One of his interests was in the relationship between the floras of New Guinea and Australia. He collected plants for the Arnold Arboretum in New Guinea, 1925-1926 and in the Solomon Islands, 1932. Brass also took part in three expeditions to New Guinea led by Richard Archbold: 1933-34; 1936-37; and 1938-39. From 1939 to 1966 he was connected with the American Museum of Natural History. After his retirement from the Museum in 1966, Brass returned to Australia, where he died in 1971.
