Biographical notes:

The Illinois Defender Project was formed in 1970 by a grant from the Illinois Law Enforcement Commission (ILEC). The main purpose of the project was to represent indigent defendants; the project was appointed to assist in approximately 2,000 criminal appeals during its three years of existence. The work of the Illinois Defender Project led to the creation of a state agency, the Office of the State Appellate Defender, in 1972.
