The Illinois Law Enforcement Commission was established by the Illinois General Assembly in 1977.

The Illinois Law Enforcement Commission was created by General Assembly in 1977 to serve several functions, including: to serve as state's official planning agency for purpose of federal funding; create statewide multi-county regional planning units; develop annual comprehensive plan to improve state's criminal justice system; coordinate local, regional, state and interstate enforcement efforts; serve as clearinghouse for information; conduct research studies; apply for and equitably distribute federal grants; and report annual to Governor, General Assembly and interested agencies on accomplishments and recommendations. Membership was to be balanced among state police, local police and private citizens; urban and rural influence; and geographic distribution. Commission was abolished by General Assembly on January 1, 1983.
