Biographical notes:
The presence of the Episcopal Church in Georgia began with the arrival of Anglican minister Dr. Henry Herbert who accompanied the first colonists in 1733. By 1840, the Protestant Episcopal Church in Georgia was a small diocese with six parishes and a bishop. By 1906 there were 27 parishes and 108 missions, necessitating the Diocese of Georgia to divide into upper and lower operational divisions. In 1907, the Diocese of Atlanta became a separate unit from the Diocese of Georgia with a diagonal boundary line running south of Fort Benning, Montezuma, Macon, Milledgeville, and Washington. The records within this collection concern primarily the lower or southern division, the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia.
