Biographical notes:

Elected to N.S.W. Parliament as Labour member for Hartley in 1891. Left the Labour Party in 1894 but retained his seat until 1901. Minister for Mines 1898-1899. Represented Parramatta in the Federal Parliament, 1901-1921. Minister for Defence, 1909-1910, Prime Minister, Minister for Home Affairs 1913-1914, Minister for the Navy 1917-1920, Treasurer 1920-1921.
