Biographical notes:

Ship captain, of Portland, Me.; master of schooner Betsey which was captured by the French in the 1790s and Moody imprisoned; member of Portland Monument Ground (association) which built the Portland Observatory (also known as Brown Tower) in 1807, on the highest hill in the city and used, chiefly to signal ships; eventually the Moody family bought the property which remains today an historic landmark; active in the formation of the Portland Marine Society (founded 1796 and still active today).
