The Commission on Chicago Historical and Architectural Landmarks (later the Commission on Chicago Landmarks) was established in 1968 by City of Chicago ordinance. Its nine members are appointed by the Mayor. The purpose of the commission is to recommend to City Council buildings, sites, artwork, objects, etc. that deserve landmark status and should be preserved and protected by law. The commission also reviews permits for proposed alterations to designated landmarks.
