Robert Jones Burdette was an American humorist and lecturer. Born in Pennsylvania and raised in Illinois, he served with distinction in the Civil War; after the war, he settled in Iowa, writing a gently humorous column for a local paper. National syndication made him widely popular and paved the way for an enormously successful lecture tour. He toured the country for years, rivalling Mark Twain in popularity; his trademark humorous philosophy, equal parts wit and sentimentality embracing a clear moral purpose, made him one of the most popular humorists of his day.
