Daniel Thomas Chandler was a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. 3rd Infantry. He served in the Mexican-American war and was wounded at the battle of Contreras. In the 1850s he served in several campaigns against the Apache Indians including a campaign on the Gila, a military expedition through the Gila River Valley. He later served as Inspector General of the Confederate States Army under Robert E. Lee during the Civil War. In 1865 he was a witness at the trial of Andersonville prison commander Major Henry Wirz.
