Biographical notes:

This series documents the department's school programs beginning with the first Curator of Education, Ruth Pershing Uhler, continuing under Chairperson Celeste Adams (1979-1984) and Director Robert Roman (1984-1986) through the most recent Education Director, Beth Schneider (1986-2007). School programs target both teachers and students and include Evenings for Educators, teacher in-service days and courses, school tours, school outreach programs and the Learning Through Art program. Introduced in 1984, Evenings for Educators invites teachers from the community to learn about the museums collections and exhibitions as tools for enriching classroom curricula. Each evening focuses on an area of the collections or a temporary exhibition through performances, lectures, and panel discussions, art demonstrations, tours, and hands-on art activities. In addition, the museum offers full-day, intensive teacher workshops. Twice a year, the Art Line magazine lists all museum programs and resources for teachers and students. Learning Through Art encourages elementary school teachers to integrate art into their classroom and offers curriculum kits and workshops that introduce educators to this interdisciplinary approach to art-focused education.
