Biographical notes:

The State Asylum for Insane Criminals was the first institution in America for the the criminally insane, established in 1859 as the New York Asylum for Insane Convicts on the grounds of Auburn State Prison in Auburn, N.Y. In Apr. 1892, the institution relocated from Auburn to Matteawan (Fishkill). The following year it was renamed Matteawan State Hospital.
