Thomas Savage lived and farmed in Salem, Iowa before enlisting with the Iowa 19th Infantry, Company K, on July 18, 1862. He served as clerk of the company until his death in December of 1862 in a Fayetteville, Arkansas hospital. His company spent all of this time in Missouri and Arkansas. Through the efforts of Alfred D. Savage the authorship of a diary found on a battlefield in Arkansas has been attributed to Thomas Savage.
