Biographical notes:

John Lewis Thomas, a lawyer from Baltimore, was a member of Northern Pacific Railroad President Henry Villard's party on the first excursion over the Northern Pacific Railroad to the Pacific Coast, in August and September, 1883. He served as a special correspondent to The American while on the excursion.
