In Australia he was Editor (1966-69) of the Tribune, TV Times (1969-70) and Herald and Sun Herald (1979-82). His publications include City on the Peel (1980), Serpent's Tooth (1984) and Waterloo Creek (1992).

In 1990 Milliss was awarded a Harold White Fellowship by the National Library to work on the diaries of Lady Franklin.
