Biographical notes:
Architect.
Lewinski was born in England, and, after leaving a seminary where he was studying for the priesthood, joined the British army. He fought in Spain and in South America, then emigrated to the United States, where he taught at the University of Louisville before moving to Lexington, Ky. in 1842. Having studied architecture and engineering in London, Lewinski was soon able to establish himself as a leading architect in Kentucky. He worked on the design of the original Eastern Lunatic Asylum, alterations made at Ashland, home of Henry Clay (Lewinski's uncle by marriage), and many other Clay family homes and Lexington churches. In the mid-1850's, Lewinski began to devote most of his attention to his duties as secretary of the Lexington Gas Company, and gave up most of his architectural work.
