Robert Anderson Pew was born August 22, 1936 in the old Lankenau Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Arthur E. Pew, Jr. and Mary Elliott Pew. He has one brother, Arthur E. Pew, III. In 1941 he moved to Oyster Bay, Long Island with his mother and step-father, Edmund Quincy Trowbridge. He graduated from the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut in 1954, then went on to Princeton University and graduated from Temple University in Philadelphia in 1959. He was a Sloan Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At the time of the interview Pew had three sons (one deceased) and one daughter. While in college Pew worked in Sun Oil Company's Marcus Hook Refinery in Pennsylvania; upon graduation he worked in production for Sun in Texas and Louisiana. In 1960 he moved to Sun's Philadelphia office, successively working in the auditing and treaury departments, the products group and as corporate secretary. He then joined Sun's Board of Directors.
