The Spears family has been resident in Indianapolis for three generations, beginning with Jean Spears' parents Louis Joseph Douglas and Marion Elizabeth Brabham Douglas Burch. Spears was born in Indianapolis. In 1946, she married Sherman J. Polley. They had three children, including Claudia Anne (1949- ) and John Evan (1952- ). They divorced in 1952; she married John Holliday Spears in 1956, and they had another child, Lucia Marion (1957). Spears attended Crispus Attucks High School and Purdue University. She taught grade school, has been involved with many community projects and organizations, and is an active member of Witherspoon Presbyterian Church.

The collection contains papers of the Spears family, 1930-1986. It includes correspondence and documents of Jean and John Spears; information about Jean Spears' parents and children; and the papers of daughter Claudia Polley, which detail her education and career in music. Also contained are materials concerning the community and church work of the family, including the Indiana Avenue Project and Witherspoon Presbyterian Church. The Fox Lake Resort (Angola, Ind.) papers include ownership lists and newsletters.
