Author, conservationist, and landscape architect.

In 1919, Carhart became the first landscape architect for the U.S. Forest Service. Starting in the 1930s, he worked as a free-lance writer of western adventures and books on conservation issues such as water rights, the timber industry, and wildlife management. He also wrote under the names Hart Thorne.
