In October 177, Alexander McDougall was appointed Major General and was put in command of a division consisting of seven Connecticut and Massachusetts regiments. In the late fall of 1777, McDougall's division attempted to prevent a British advance southwest of Philadelphia.

In 1778, Alexander McDougall succeeded Israel Putnam as the commanding general at the Hudson Highlands.
