The McLean County Coal Co. was the largest and most successful coal mine in McLean Co., located on the west side of Bloomington, Ill. It operated from 1867 to 1929. Financial backers included the financially and politically prominent Stevenson brothers, James B., William, and Adlai Ewing, who served as Grover Cleveland's vice president. The mine was the subject of a lengthy article in The Daily Bulletin, a Bloomington-area newspaper. It was also one of the targets in the national strike of 1894 by the United Mine Workers of America. Production halted in 1929. The mine shafts were sealed and the buildings dismantled, leaving no visible traces of the mine.
