The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) was formed in 1927 and is the central governing body of the organised trade union movement in Australia. Included in this collection are the records of the ACTU predecessor body, the Commonwealth Council of Federated Unions, established in 1923.

The Australian Council of Trade Unions arose from an All-Australian Trade Union Congress held in Melbourne in May 1927 whose purpose was to consider a more complete form of organization of the Trade Union movement in Australia. In 1947 the constitution was rewritten changing the name to The Australian Council of Trade Unions.
