Israel Stollman graduated from City College with a degree in housing and planning in 1947. He served as a planner with the Cleveland Planning Commission in 1951; taught at Western Reserve University; worked on a comprehensive plan for Youngstown, Ohio in 1951; and created the City and Regional Planning Department at Ohio State University. In 1968, he was appointed the executive director of the American Society of Planning Officials (ASPO); in 1978, under his leadership, ASPO merged with the American Institute of Planners (AIP) to form the American Planning Association (APA). He served as executive director of APA until his retirement in 1994. He has also taught planning history at the University of Virginia.
